North Park

North Park is a community centrally located in San Diego; the community is governed by the Greater North Park Community Plan and the University Avenue Mobility Plan. North Park is bordered by Interstate 8 and Adams Avenue to the north, Juniper Street and Greater Golden Hill to the south, Interstate 805 and State Route 15 to the east, and Park Boulevard and Balboa Park to the west (see Maps 1 & 2). City-acknowledged North Park neighborhoods include Altadena, Burlingame, and the eastern portion of University Heights. At the same time, several housing subdivisions dating back to the early 1920 such as Switzer-Highlands and Florida Canyon have begun organizing monthly meetings of their own.

North Park is one of the oldest communities in the City of San Diego. As a result, its abundance of historic properties provides a valuable and unique element to the community, representing a broad range of architectural styles. Private investment and community involvement have helped revive North Park's built environment over the past ten years. The North Park Pilot Village, a multi-project mixed-use development, exemplifies this revitalization by providing the neighborhood with commercial retail, affordable housing, and community spaces. The distinctive North Park Sign, a vibrant arts district, and a wide array of cultural events have transformed North Park into the "Creative Community".

Many of the detached houses built before 1940 are being replaced with multifamily units, yet the southern portion of the community is mostly single-family units. Most of the commercial development is strip development along University Avenue, 30th Street, El Cajon Boulevard, and Adams Avenue (see Map 3). Several bus routes serve North Park and the community's major transportation corridors include University Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard. Additionally, North Park is to the immediate west of Interstate 805, State Route 15, and to the south of Interstate 8, providing easy highway access.

In 1996, the North Park Redevelopment Project Area was established, an area that incorporates a large portion of the community. Since that time, the North Park Redevelopment Project Area Committee (PAC) has supported several projects designed to revitalize the community (see Map 4). North Park is also served by the North Park Business Improvement District (North Park Main Street), the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement District (The Boulevard), the Adams Avenue Business Improvement District, and several maintenance assessment districts (Map 5 & 6).
